About Explore Bardstown

An independent guide to Kentucky's Bourbon Capital, researched page by page and dated so you know how fresh it is.

Explore Bardstown is an independent visitor guide to Bardstown and Nelson County, Kentucky. It exists to answer the questions people actually ask before a trip here: which distillery tours are worth booking and how far ahead, what is open on a Monday, where to stay if you want to walk to dinner, and what else to do once you have had your fill of rickhouses.

Who publishes the guide

The site is published by Appalachian Frontiers LLC, a small independent publisher of regional travel guides. Pages are written and edited by the Explore Bardstown editorial desk. We are not the Bardstown-Nelson County Tourist & Convention Commission, the City of Bardstown, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association or any distillery, and no business pays to be included or to be described favorably. For the official tourism office, see Visit Bardstown.

How pages are researched

Every page starts from a documented fact base. Before anything is written, researchers gather the details a visitor needs from primary sources: a distillery’s own tour and booking pages, Kentucky State Parks, the National Park Service, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, the local newspaper (the Kentucky Standard), historical societies and archives. Each business is checked for recent evidence that it is still open, and closures are recorded so we can tell you what changed. Barton 1792’s public tours, for example, ended in 2022, and the paper Bourbon Trail passport has been retired.

Key facts link to their source inline, so you can check them yourself. Each page shows the date its facts were last checked. Hours, prices and tour line-ups change often in bourbon country, especially around the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, so always confirm with the business before you drive.

What we will not do

  • We never invent experiences. Our writers describe places from research and published visitor feedback, not from staged “we went” stories.
  • We do not accept payment for coverage, and advertisers never see pages before publication.
  • We tell local legends as legends. Bardstown has wonderful stories (Jesse James at the Talbott Tavern, a future French king’s murals, paintings once credited to Rubens), and we give you the evidence alongside them.

Images on this site

The photographs on this site are AI-generated illustrations created to show the kind of place each page describes. They are not photographs of the actual businesses, and details such as signage, room layouts and building proportions may differ from reality. Each image is marked as AI-generated in its alt text and in its file metadata. The editorial policy explains how they are made and checked.

How the site makes money

Lodging maps on the site come from Stay22. If you book a room through one of those maps, the publisher may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That arrangement never affects which places we recommend or what we say about them.
