Christmas in Bardstown starts the night after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 27, 2026, when Light Up Bardstown switches on the tree, the lampposts and the wreaths around Court Square. From there it is a steady run: the Kiwanis Christmas Parade on Thursday, December 3, the musical An Old Kentucky Christmas Carol at My Old Kentucky Home from December 4 to 19, singing guides in the decorated mansion, and a Santa train 20 minutes south. The downtown events are free, the town is small enough to walk, and the brick Federal storefronts do the rest.

Light Up Bardstown: Friday, November 27
The 16th Light Up Bardstown is the official start of the season. Bardstown Main Street lights the city Christmas tree along with the lampposts, wreaths and stars around the square, and the evening comes with hot cocoa, face painting, photos with Santa and a mailbox for letters to the North Pole. The Christmas Corner sets up at 1 Court Square, in front of the gallery run by Bardstown for the Arts.
Last year’s lighting ran from 6 to 8 p.m., and North Third Street closed from Flaget Avenue to Court Square starting at 5 p.m. Plan on similar timing, park a few blocks out, and get to the square early if you want a view of the tree when it comes on. It is a hometown event with a lot of families, so expect strollers and a friendly crush near Santa.
The Kiwanis Christmas Parade: Thursday, December 3
Bardstown holds its Christmas parade on a weeknight, usually the first Thursday of December. The 2026 theme is “Wrapped in Christmas Magic,” and local radio stations WBRT and WOKH present it. In 2025 there was music on Court Square from 5 p.m. before the parade stepped off at 6 p.m., and Visit Bardstown’s event listing will carry this year’s times. Bundle up: December evenings average around freezing, with a normal low of about 30°F.
Christmas at My Old Kentucky Home
The state park at Federal Hill does the season properly. During “Merry & Bright,” the three-story brick mansion is dressed for a 19th-century Christmas and Victorian-costumed guides sing on the tour. Last season the tours ran from November 14 to January 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit Bardstown has also promoted candlelight tours with bourbon barrel cake, cookies and hot cider. Check the park’s event calendar for this year’s candlelight nights.
The big ticket is An Old Kentucky Christmas Carol, a musical staged on the park grounds from December 4 to 19, 2026, from 6 to 9 p.m. Book it once tickets appear, because evening dates near Christmas go first. In 2025 the park also held a Christmas Carnival on the grounds on December 6 and 7. The 2026 date has not been posted yet.
A few practical notes. Regular mansion tours are capped at 25 people, first come, first served. The park is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Admission is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $12 for ages 6 to 17. Our My Old Kentucky Home guide has the full visitor rundown.
Bourbon at Christmas
If a bottle is on your gift list, you are in the right town. The Bardstown Collection, a Bardstown-only collaborative release from seven local distilleries, returns on November 19, 2026. It is now on a two-year cycle and, as Visit Bardstown’s announcement notes, has raised more than $360,000 for local scholarships and programs. Distillery gift shops carry their own exclusives year-round. Our guide to buying bourbon in Bardstown covers the rules for shipping and flying home.
Watch the holiday closures. The Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Willett adds the day after Thanksgiving, so Light Up Friday is not a Willett day. The free Getz Museum in Spalding Hall closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day too.
The Santa train in New Haven
About 21 minutes south of Bardstown, the Kentucky Railway Museum runs the Santa Claus Express on December 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20. It is a 1.5-hour ride for $28, booked through the museum’s train-ride page. The museum also lists a North Pole Express at the same price. These are the most kid-focused tickets of the season, so book early. The Kentucky Railway Museum guide covers the rest of the museum.
Where to stay and eat for Christmas
For Light Up night, nothing beats a room on the square. The Talbott Inn and the rooms above the Old Talbott Tavern are the only lodging on Court Square itself. The historic B&Bs are made for cold weather: Bourbon Manor has gas fireplaces and a bourbon lounge, and the Bourbon Ball Inn has fireplaces in select suites. Browse them in our historic inns and B&Bs guide. The Christmas weekends are busy but gentler than October, so book a few weeks out, and earlier for Light Up weekend.
For dinner, the Rickhouse under Spalding Hall is the candlelit choice, with brick arches and a long bourbon list (closed Sunday and Monday). For gifts, walk the boutiques and galleries around the square with our downtown shopping guide.
Getting here for the holidays
Bardstown is an easy holiday drive from much of the region: about 56 minutes from downtown Louisville, 1 hour 12 minutes from Lexington, 2 hours 30 minutes from Cincinnati and about 3 hours from Nashville or Indianapolis, based on routing estimates without traffic. Louisville’s airport (SDF) is the closest, about 36 miles away. Thanksgiving weekend traffic on I-65 can stretch those times, so leave early on Light Up Friday if you are driving in the same day.
Tips for a Bardstown Christmas trip
- Build the trip around one anchor night: Light Up (Friday after Thanksgiving), the parade (Thursday, December 3) or a Christmas Carol performance.
- Pack for cold. December averages a high of 46.5°F and brings about 2.5 inches of snow in a normal year.
- Do the mansion tour in daylight, then come back to the square after dark for the lights.
- There is no town-wide New Year’s Eve event, so book a dinner reservation instead.
When the lights come down, the town settles into its quietest months. Our winter in Bardstown guide covers January to March.
