The most unusual bed in Bardstown is the Jail Cell room at Jailer’s Inn, where you sleep behind 30-inch limestone walls in a jail that held prisoners until 1987. Close behind: suites and lodges at Log Still Distillery, where you can walk from your room to the tasting room; the six guest rooms above the 1779 Old Talbott Tavern; a bourbon-themed B&B with its own 100-bottle lounge; and an 1857 mansion on a vineyard. Most of them are small, so plan well ahead for weekends.
Sleep in the old county jail
Nelson County held prisoners on this spot on West Stephen Foster Avenue, half a block from Court Square, from 1797 until 1987, when it closed as the oldest operating jail complex in Kentucky. Jailer’s Inn now runs the 1819 front jail as a bed and breakfast. Most rooms are comfortable and pretty, with names like the Victorian, the Library and the Honey Suite, and the 1819 Room has a double Jacuzzi.
The one everyone asks about is the Jail Cell: a full bed plus bunk beds once used by prisoners, for up to three guests. It is more fun than spooky, and the full breakfast the next morning helps. Guests also tour the 1874 back jail, which has been left largely as it was, dry stone behind a tall stone wall. The Travel Channel once named the building one of the 10 most haunted places in the U.S., and the inn is happy to tell you about the jailer and the prisoner said to linger. Read more on the jail’s history and our Jailer’s Inn stay guide. No pets.
Wake up at a distillery
At Dant Crossing in Gethsemane, about 22 minutes south of Court Square, Log Still Distillery has built a small village around a 12-acre stocked fishing lake. The Dant family has deep roots in Kentucky distilling, and room names honor family members: the Barbara Ann and Mary Estelle suites in The Homestead farmhouse, the J. Wallace & Nancy Dant Sr. room in the Heritage House.
| Log Still option | What it is | Published rate |
|---|---|---|
| The Homestead suites | Historic farmhouse B&B, Queen suites; King primary suite with soaker tub | $189; $249 |
| Heritage House | Queen and King rooms, a Kids Suite with balcony | $189-$249 |
| Poplar Cottage | Studio for two, or Retreat sleeping six with kitchen and lake deck | $249; $489 |
| Remington Lodge | Three suites, private chef option in Back Forty | $249 |
| The Lodge / The Mansion | Whole houses sleeping 6 or 8 | $747; $1,099 |
The reason to stay is what happens after the tours close: an evening walk around the lake, a concert at The Amp amphitheater (nearly every weekend from May to October), and no drive home. Some rooms are accessible, including the Ann Catherine suite and the Poplar Retreat. No pets in any unit. See Log Still’s distillery tour page and our Log Still stays guide.
A room above a 1779 tavern
The Old Talbott Tavern on Court Square dates to 1779, a year before the settlement that became Bardstown began, and its original section has stone walls two feet thick. Its six guest rooms are each named for a famous or infamous guest, and the tavern’s legends are some of the best in Kentucky: Jesse James is said to have shot at the painted birds in an upstairs mural (ghost hunters ask for the room named after him), and a Lady in White is said to drift through the Audubon Dining Room. Historians have poked holes in some of the tavern’s claims (Louis-Philippe’s diary suggests a two-day stay, not a long residence), but sleeping here is still a direct line to the frontier. The newer Talbott Inn rooms next door offer the location with modern bathrooms. More stories on our haunted Bardstown page.
Bourbon-themed from the pillow up
Two properties build the entire stay around bourbon.
Bourbon Manor calls itself the first bourbon-themed B&B in the world. Its ten spirit-themed rooms fill a c. 1810 Federal house and a c. 1823 Greek Revival mansion, and the lounge, cheekily named The Bunghole, holds more than 100 bourbons. There is a nightly happy hour, a guests-only spa and a bourbon concierge who will plan your tours.
The Trail Hotel went bigger. The 1970 Holiday Inn reopened in 2025 as a 95-room hotel with eight bourbon-themed suites, a 36-seat Bourbon Vault speakeasy, a steakhouse and a Bourbon Butler to arrange VIP tours. It became an official Kentucky Bourbon Trail partner a few months after opening.
A mid-century motor lodge, reborn
The Bardstown Motor Lodge is what happens when a 1950s roadside motel gets a thoughtful makeover. The Kurtz Restaurant and Parkview Motel served travelers for 84 years before closing in 2021; it reopened in 2023 with 30 rooms and five suites, a pool club with a poolside bar, fire pits with s’mores, a retro rec room and a restaurant called Toogie’s Table. It is the most fun you can have for around $100 a night in town, and Matador Network called it the best hotel along the Bourbon Trail.
Sleep among the vines
Springhill Winery & Plantation B&B swaps bourbon for wine. The 1857 mansion sits on a three-acre vineyard about halfway between Bardstown and Bloomfield, with three king suites, a queen suite and two queen rooms sharing a bath. Breakfast is a full country spread, and tastings are complimentary. It makes a good change of pace in the middle of a long distillery trip. See our Springhill Winery B&B page.
Rustic and outdoorsy
Bardstown has no glamping resort, but you can get close. White Acres Campground rents camping cabins with heat, air and a deck for $65 a night, about five minutes from downtown, and Log Still’s lake cottages bring the outdoors without the tent. Details are in camping and RV parks.
Coming soon
Old SteelHouse, which opened a downtown tasting room in October 2025, is restoring the historic distillery site in Deatsville and has said lodging is part of the plan once restoration is done. Nothing is bookable yet.
Which unusual stay fits you
| If you want | Book | Pair it with |
|---|---|---|
| A story to tell at work on Monday | The Jail Cell at Jailer’s Inn | A ghost walk downtown and dinner at the Talbott |
| A full bourbon weekend without driving | Log Still suites or cottages | A distillery tour on site and a show at The Amp |
| History you can touch | Old Talbott Tavern rooms | Court Square, the Getz Museum and St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral |
| Bourbon all day, then a spa | Bourbon Manor | The concierge’s tour plan and the nightly happy hour |
| Resort comforts with a bourbon theme | The Trail Hotel | The Bourbon Vault speakeasy and the pool |
| Retro fun on a budget | Bardstown Motor Lodge | Toogie’s Table and s’mores at the fire pits |
| A break from bourbon | Springhill Winery B&B | A wine tasting and a slow country breakfast |
A few practical notes apply to all of them. Small inns fill first, so book the moment you have dates. Historic buildings mean stairs and small bathrooms; ask about ground-floor rooms if that matters. Log Still and Jailer’s Inn allow no pets. And the distillery stays sit out in the county, so eat on site or plan a driver for dinner in town. If you are still weighing the options, where to stay in Bardstown sorts them by area.
