Winter in Bardstown comes in two parts. December is Christmas: Light Up Bardstown on November 27, 2026, a parade on December 3 and a Christmas Carol musical at Federal Hill through December 19. Then January to mid-March is the quietest, easiest season of the year. Distillery tours that sell out in October have open slots, B&B rooms are available on short notice, and you can get a seat at the bar. Pack a warm coat (January averages 43°F for a high), and you will have the Bourbon Capital mostly to yourself.
December: the Christmas stretch
The holiday run starts the Friday after Thanksgiving and peaks in the first three weeks of December. The highlights for 2026:
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Fri Nov 27 | Light Up Bardstown on Court Square (free) |
| Thu Dec 3 | Kiwanis Christmas Parade (free) |
| Dec 4-19 | An Old Kentucky Christmas Carol, My Old Kentucky Home |
| Dec 5-6, 12-13, 19-20 | Santa Claus Express train, Kentucky Railway Museum, New Haven ($28) |
| Mid-Nov to early Jan | “Merry & Bright” Christmas mansion tours |
Everything is covered on the Christmas in Bardstown page. Between Christmas and New Year’s, expect short holiday closures. Willett, for example, closes on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. There is no town-wide New Year’s Eve event, so make a dinner reservation instead.
January to March: the quiet season
This is when Bardstown is at its most local. The outdoor concerts and the farmers market are off, the festival crowds are months away, and lodging is at its easiest. A few schedule changes to know:
- My Old Kentucky Home runs mansion tours Wednesday through Sunday only, from January 2 to March 15, according to Kentucky State Parks. Its gift shop also closes on Tuesdays in January and February.
- The park’s 18-hole Kenny Rapier Golf Course stays open, on winter hours through March 1 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends). Mild winter days do happen.
- The free Oscar Getz Museum of Bourbon History keeps the same hours year-round: Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday noon to 4 p.m.
Winter weather
| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Snow |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 46.5°F | 30.1°F | 2.5 in. |
| January | 43.3°F | 26.1°F | 4.2 in. |
| February | 48.1°F | 29.1°F | 3.7 in. |
| March | 57.4°F | 36.5°F | 1.3 in. |
Those are NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for the station about five miles east of downtown, which averages 11.9 inches of snow a year. Most winter days are simply gray and chilly. When snow does fall, the rural roads out to Loretto, Gethsemane and Clermont can stay slick longer than downtown, so give yourself extra time on distillery days and never pair icy roads with a tasting. Book a driver. Pack a warm coat, gloves and waterproof shoes, since you will be walking between rickhouses, brick sidewalks and parking lots more than you expect.
Distillery touring in winter
Winter is the best time of year to get the tour you want. In fall, most distilleries sell out their 90-day booking windows. In January, you can usually book much closer to the date. Tours still include the rickhouses, which are unheated barrel warehouses, so wear a real coat and closed shoes. The sweet, charred-oak smell inside is the same in every season.
Check holiday hours around New Year’s and each distillery’s weekly schedule, since some close one or two days a week. Our distillery tours guide compares every tour near town, with prices, lengths and drive times.
Warm indoor things to do
Winter is a good excuse to learn something. The Bourbon Capital Academy runs its two-hour “Bourbon in Bardstown” intro course on two Saturdays a month in Spalding Hall. It costs $85 and starts with a guided tour of the Getz Museum, then moves to an “old school versus new school” tasting. Take it early in your trip and every distillery visit afterward makes more sense.
The Getz Museum itself is worth a slow hour. Its collection of more than 5,000 artifacts runs from colonial days through the 1960s and includes Abraham Lincoln’s liquor license, several moonshine stills and Prohibition-era prescriptions for medicinal whiskey. Plan on 45 to 75 minutes, and leave a donation if you enjoyed it, since admission is free.
Other good cold-day stops:
- The Civil War museums on East Broadway, with one of the largest collections of Civil War artifacts in the country, once they reopen on March 1 (they close from December 2 through February 28, and open weekends only in November).
- The Old Talbott Tavern, a 1779 stone building with a bourbon bar, fireplaces and a Jesse James legend.
- The old Nelson County jail, where the 1874 back jail is almost unchanged.
Our rainy day guide has more ideas that work in any bad weather.
Where to warm up at night
Bardstown’s bourbon bars are at their best in winter, when a stool at the counter is easy to get. The Rickhouse, in the brick-arched basement of Spalding Hall, has about 150 bourbons and candlelight (open Tuesday to Saturday evenings). Our bourbon bars guide covers the rest.
For lodging, pick a room with a fireplace. Bourbon Manor, in two pre-Civil War homes on North Third Street, has gas fireplaces, whirlpool tubs and a bourbon lounge called The Bunghole with more than 100 bourbons. The Bourbon Ball Inn has fireplaces in select suites. Since demand is low, winter is also when a splurge room is most likely to be open on short notice.
A winter weekend plan
Here is a three-day outline that works around the winter schedules:
- Friday: arrive by mid-afternoon, tour one distillery, then have dinner at the Rickhouse (open until 10 p.m. on Fridays). The Old Talbott Tavern’s bourbon bar usually has live music on Friday and Saturday evenings.
- Saturday: take the Bourbon Capital Academy class if it is one of the two Saturdays that month, or spend the morning in the Getz Museum (and, from March 1, the Civil War museums on Broadway, which close for December through February). After lunch, drive out to one of the country distilleries while there is still light.
- Sunday: catch the 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. mansion tour at My Old Kentucky Home (Wednesday to Sunday in winter), then stop by the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience, which opens at 1 p.m. on Sundays, before you head home.
Winter daylight is short, so keep country drives in the middle of the day. For a year-round version of this plan, see our weekend in Bardstown itinerary.
Tips for a winter trip
- Visit midweek from Wednesday, so the mansion is open.
- Build the day around indoor stops and a single distillery, since daylight ends early.
- Check restaurant days before you go. The Rickhouse, for one, is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
- Watch the forecast for ice and adjust drive days.
