Bardstown on a budget

A free bourbon museum, a free cathedral, free summer concerts and distillery tours that start at $24.

Bardstown is one of the easier bourbon towns to do on a budget. The town’s bourbon museum is free, so is the 1816 cathedral next door, and the historic district is a walking tour that costs nothing. Two of the best distillery tours around, at Bardstown Bourbon Company and Preservation, start at $24 with the tasting included. Motels a few blocks from Court Square ran about $64 to $74 on a fall 2026 weeknight, and RV sites start at $55. The trick is timing: avoid festival weekends and come midweek.

Free things to do

A full day in Bardstown can cost nothing but lunch. The best free stops:

The Getz Museum alone justifies an hour; its website lists free admission and asks for donations. Four Roses says plainly that there’s “no added cost” to visit its visitor centers, browse the shops, buy bottles or have a drink at the bar. The free things to do guide has more.

Free festivals and events

Time your trip right and the entertainment is free, too.

  • The free summer concert series at Bardstown Community Park runs every Friday at 7 p.m. from late May to late August. Bring a lawn chair and a picnic.
  • The Bourbon City Street Concert fills North Third Street for a free night in June.
  • The Bardstown Arts & Crafts Festival on the second weekend of October has 250-plus booths and free admission.
  • Light Up Bardstown on the Friday after Thanksgiving brings the tree lighting, hot cocoa and Santa photos to Court Square at no charge.
  • The downtown Halloween Spooktacular in late October is free trick-or-treating for families.

The summer concerts guide and the events calendar have dates.

The cheapest good distillery tours

Bourbon is where a Bardstown budget usually leaks. Pick one or two paid tours and fill the rest of the day for free.

ExperiencePriceLengthWhat’s included
Bardstown Bourbon Co. Core Four$241 hourDistillery, rickhouse barrel tasting, 4 whiskeys
Bardstown Bourbon Co. Rickhouse Barrel Thieving$301 hour3 barrel-drawn whiskeys, no production tour
Preservation Distillery tour and tastingFrom $24About 1 hourFarm walk, pot stills, tasting
Boundary Oak (Radcliff)$10 tasting; $15 tour and tastingWalk-in, all dayFarther west, near Fort Knox

Prices are from Bardstown Bourbon Company’s tour page, Preservation’s site and Boundary Oak’s site. Bardstown Bourbon Company runs no tours on Mondays or Tuesdays. Lux Row tells guests their “first few pours are on the house” with a booked tour; check its current tour price before you go. For more ideas, see budget bourbon experiences.

Two money tips. First, ask when you book if your designated driver needs a full-price ticket or can join on a non-tasting option. Second, compare bottle prices before buying in a gift shop; one Willett reviewer noted that local liquor stores can undercut the distillery shop on the same bottle.

Prices come from My Old Kentucky Home’s admission page, the Civil War museum’s admission page and the Stephen Foster Story ticket page. One Civil War museum ticket covers four museums and Old Bardstown Village, which makes it the best value on the list. If you’ll see several summer shows, the Stephen Foster Drama Association’s $180 season pass covers the musical, Annie and five Live at the Park concerts.

Sleeping cheap

Lodging is the biggest line in most budgets, and it swings hard by date. A Google Hotels snapshot for a late-September 2026 weeknight showed:

WhereRate snapshotWhy pick it
White Acres Campground$55 RV site for 2; $65 cabinCheapest bed; open year-round
SureStay General NelsonAbout $64-$69Walk to Court Square; pool, breakfast
Bourbon Capital InnAbout $69Downtown on North Third
Old Bardstown InnAbout $73-$74; published from $84.99Across from My Old Kentucky Home; kids under 12 free
Little Patch of Heaven CampgroundRV sites from $78Fishing lake, open year-round
La QuintaAbout $84-$93Top-rated chain on the bypass

White Acres also knocks $5 off for military, Good Sam and AAA members. The state park campground at My Old Kentucky Home is closed for a rebuild with no reopening date, so don’t plan around it. Add roughly 10 percent in room taxes; the Old Bardstown Inn quotes 10.24 percent. A group of four or more can do well with a vacation rental, which averaged about $277 a night over the past year. The hotels guide and camping and RV guide compare more options.

Eating well for less

  • Hadorn’s Bakery sells donuts and Yum Yums for a few dollars; it closes Mondays and sells out early.
  • Pat’s Place on North Third is a family diner for breakfast and lunch.
  • Bardstown Burger serves burgers and milkshakes downtown, Monday to Saturday.
  • At the Hurst Drug soda fountain a milkshake runs about $9; pay cash to skip the card surcharge.
  • The farmers market is the place to build a picnic from local bread, fruit and jellies.

Distillery kitchens serve lunch only, so a big midday meal and a simple dinner fit the town’s rhythm and your budget. Kentucky’s 6 percent sales tax applies to meals. The cheap eats guide has more.

A sample budget day

Breakfast at Hadorn’s, the 9 a.m. mansion tour ($18), a walk around Court Square, a burger lunch downtown, the free Getz Museum and Basilica, the $24 Core Four tour at Bardstown Bourbon Company with a designated driver, then a picnic at a free Friday concert in summer. Admission and tours come to $42 per adult. Downtown’s Bourbon Capital District even lets you stroll with a drink bought from a licensed vendor between noon and 9 p.m.

When to go for the best prices

Come Sunday through Thursday, and avoid Kentucky Bourbon Festival weekend in mid-September and Arts & Crafts Festival weekend in October, when rooms are scarce. January through March is the quietest stretch, with the easiest bookings, though the mansion runs a Wednesday-to-Sunday schedule until March 15 and the Civil War museums close for the winter. April and May offer mild weather and fair prices. The best time to visit guide weighs it all.
