Bardstown’s calendar runs on bourbon, history and a very active Main Street. The headliner is the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in mid-September (2027 dates: September 16-19), followed in October by the free Arts & Crafts Festival, with 250-plus booths. Summer belongs to the Stephen Foster Story and free Friday concerts, and from Thanksgiving weekend the town turns Court Square into a lamplit Christmas card. If a date matters to your trip, plan around it early, because the big weekends fill every room in town.

The big three
The Kentucky Bourbon Festival is the weekend the whole bourbon world points at Bardstown. It has been ticketed and 21-and-over since 2021, it sells out, and it draws guests from all over the country. The 2026 edition ran September 10-13 for the 35th anniversary. Read the Kentucky Bourbon Festival guide for tickets, the 2027 plan and how to survive the lodging crunch.
The Arts & Crafts Festival has filled the streets around Spalding Hall on the second weekend of October since 1981. It is free, it is juried, and Bardstown Main Street’s festival page lists the streets it takes over. It is the easiest way to see the town at its fall best. Older listings still call it the Arts, Crafts & Antiques Fair.
Christmas in Bardstown stretches from Light Up Bardstown on the Friday after Thanksgiving through carols at My Old Kentucky Home and a Thursday-night parade. The Christmas in Bardstown guide has every date.
Plan by season
Each season has its own rhythm, and each has a guide:
- Fall in Bardstown: festival season, crisp distillery weather and the busiest hotel calendar of the year.
- Winter in Bardstown: Christmas lights, then the quietest, cheapest stretch for touring.
- Spring in Bardstown: Easter tours at Federal Hill, Derby season and the farmers market’s return.
- Summer in Bardstown: outdoor theater, fireworks and free concerts in the park.
Summer’s free music and small-town fairs
From late May to late August, Bardstown Parks & Recreation runs free Friday-night concerts at Bardstown Community Park, and North Third Street closes for the Bourbon City Street Concert in June. The summer concerts guide covers those plus the ticketed Stephen Foster Story and Live at the Park shows and the country acts at Log Still’s amphitheater. July brings the Fourth of July celebration at My Old Kentucky Home and the Nelson County Fair, followed by Buttermilk Days in late August.
October after dark
Bardstown takes its ghosts seriously. The 1779 Talbott Tavern and the old jail both trade on their haunted reputations, a local guide leads weekend ghost walks, and the state park runs lantern-lit tours of Federal Hill in late October. Start with Halloween and ghost walks in Bardstown.
Bourbon events beyond the festival
The Bourbon Festival is not the only way to catch Bardstown’s distilleries in party mode. National Bourbon Week opens every June 14, National Bourbon Day, with distillery dinners, panels and limited releases, and it is quieter and cheaper than September. On a two-year cycle, the Bardstown Collection brings a Bardstown-only bottle release from local distilleries, and the next one lands on November 19, 2026.
Tips for event weekends
Book lodging first, then tickets for anything with a cap. Festival weekends also push distillery tours to sell out, and most distilleries release tours in roughly 90-day blocks, so check how far ahead to book distillery tours before you commit to a date. Downtown streets close for the big street events, so park once and walk. If you can be flexible, the weekends just before and after a festival give you the same fall color at friendlier prices. Our best time to visit guide weighs the trade-offs.
