Cabins and vacation rentals

Whole houses downtown, lodges by a distillery lake and simple camping cabins: how to rent your own place in bourbon country.

Bardstown has about 180 active vacation rentals, plus a few standout places to rent a whole cottage or lodge: restored 1800s cottages a few blocks from Court Square, lakeside lodges and a four-bedroom mansion at Log Still Distillery, and simple camping cabins at White Acres. Rentals averaged about $277 a night over the past year, which gets expensive for two people but cheap fast when four or six split it. If you are traveling as a family or a group of friends, a house usually beats two hotel rooms.

When a rental makes sense

Bardstown’s hotels and inns are small, and rooms go fast on busy weekends. A rental solves several problems at once for groups: everyone sleeps under one roof, you get a kitchen for breakfast and a living room for comparing gift-shop bottles at night, and the designated driver has one address to get everyone home to.

Rentals make less sense for a couple on a one-night stop. Cleaning fees, minimum stays and self check-in add friction, and a downtown B&B gives you breakfast and a host who knows which distillery tours still have space. See historic inns and B&Bs for that route.

The rental market by the numbers

AirDNA’s September 2026 market data counted 180 active short-term rentals in Bardstown across Airbnb, Vrbo and Booking.com, up from about 122 in a 2023 snapshot. Over the trailing year, listings averaged 48% occupancy and an average daily rate of about $277. Demand is steadier across the year than you might expect in a festival town, but September and October weekends are still the pinch points.

What that means for you: outside fall weekends, you have real choice and can shop around. For Bourbon Festival weekend, many groups rebook the same house a year ahead, so the good ones may already be gone by spring.

Historic cottages near Court Square

For a whole house you can walk from, start with Colonel’s Cottage Inns, run by Colonel Michael and Margaret Sue Masters. Their four cottages carry some real age:

  • Pioneer Park Cottage, about 1880, two bedrooms and two baths
  • Millstone Cottage, about 1880, two bedrooms and one bath
  • John Fitch Cottage, about 1830, one bedroom and one bath
  • Bourbon Cottage, about 1903, two bedrooms and one bath

They also run the Kentucky Bourbon House on Court Square, with an upstairs Bourbon Loft and a downstairs Chapeze Suite. Guests get welcome baskets and the owners’ signature bourbon coffee. Two couples in the Pioneer Park Cottage, each with a bathroom, is a hard setup to beat downtown.

Lodges, cottages and a mansion at Log Still

South of town at Dant Crossing in Gethsemane, about 22 minutes from Court Square, Log Still Distillery rents a small village of lodging around a 12-acre stocked fishing lake. The group-friendly options, with published nightly rates:

Guests can walk to the distillery tasting room and the lake path, and The Amp amphitheater on the same campus hosts concerts nearly every weekend from May to October. Log Still allows no pets in any unit. Book early for concert weekends. Our Log Still stays page has the room-by-room detail.

Camping cabins

If “cabin” means a bed, a heater and a deck under the trees, White Acres Campground on Boston Road rents camping cabins for $65 a night, about five minutes from downtown. Each has a full bed, a table and chairs, heat and air, and a deck. The campground has a bathhouse, and it is worth asking what linens are provided when you book. It is the cheapest roof in town and a good fit for a fishing or budget trip. More on the campground in camping and RV parks.

Rural cabins and farm stays

Nelson County is mostly farmland, knobs and creek valleys, and many of the Airbnb and Vrbo listings sit out in the county: cabins, farmhouses and cottages on working land. They trade walkability for quiet, stars and space. Before you book one, check:

  • Drive time to where you will spend evenings. A “Bardstown” listing can be 20 minutes out on dark two-lane roads.
  • Road and driveway conditions, especially after rain or in winter.
  • Cell and internet coverage, which may be patchy on rural roads. Ask the host.
  • Parking for every car in your group.

Getting around from a rental

Bardstown has no public transit, and rural rentals sit on two-lane roads without sidewalks, so a car is part of the deal outside downtown. That is fine for grocery runs and daytime sightseeing, but distillery days call for a plan. Book a tour company that picks up at your door, hire a private driver, or name one person who does not taste. Several tour operators and drivers work the area; see our tours and transportation guide. Stock the kitchen on arrival day, too, since a rural stay can be a long drive from the nearest store.

Booking tips and the fine print

Registration matters. Nelson County requires short-term rentals and B&Bs to register with the Bardstown-Nelson County Tourist Commission and collect the 3% local room tax, along with Kentucky’s 1% state transient room tax and 6% sales tax. Budget roughly 10% on top of the nightly rate, plus any cleaning and service fees, and compare the total rather than the headline number.

Read cancellation terms closely for fall dates, since festival weekends often carry stricter rules. Ask about stairs if anyone in the group has mobility needs; historic cottages rarely have ground-floor everything. If you are bringing a dog, filter for pets first, then read our pet-friendly stays page. Planning a big group weekend? Questions people ask

How much does a vacation rental in Bardstown cost?
AirDNA puts the average daily rate for Bardstown short-term rentals at about $277 over the 12 months to September 2026. Small cottages come in lower and large houses for groups much higher, and festival weekends push everything up. Cleaning fees and about 10% in taxes are usually added.
Are there cabins near Bardstown?
Yes, in a few forms. White Acres Campground rents simple camping cabins with heat and air for $65 a night, Log Still Distillery rents cottages and lodges on its lake near Gethsemane, and rural rentals on Airbnb and Vrbo include cabins out in Nelson County.
Is a vacation rental a good idea for a bourbon trip with friends?
Often, yes. A house lets a group share one kitchen, one living room and one designated driver's worth of logistics, and many groups rebook the same house every year for the Bourbon Festival. Book early and confirm the parking situation for several cars.
Do Bardstown vacation rentals have to be licensed?
Short-term rentals must register with the Bardstown-Nelson County Tourist Commission and collect the local 3% room tax plus state taxes. A registered rental is a good sign the host is operating properly.
Can I rent a whole house at a distillery?
Yes. Log Still rents The Lodge (three bedrooms, sleeps six) at $747 a night and The Mansion (four bedrooms, sleeps eight) at $1,099, with smaller cottages and suites too. No pets are allowed in any Log Still unit.
