How to book distillery tours

When to reserve, where you can walk in, and how to rescue a trip when every slot says sold out.

Book distillery tours around Bardstown before you book anything else, and for fall weekends do it about three months out, because many distilleries release their schedules in 90-day blocks and the popular slots vanish first. Spring and summer weekdays usually open up two to four weeks ahead. If you are late, you still have options: several stops take walk-ins, weekday and first-of-the-day slots free up more often, and cancellations reappear as refund deadlines pass. Here is how to time it, stop by stop.

The short version: lead times by season

When you travelBook toursBook lodging
Kentucky Bourbon Festival weekend (mid-September)As soon as tickets are boughtUp to a year ahead
Other September and October weekendsAbout 3 months1-3 months
September and October weekdays3-6 weeksA few weeks
National Bourbon Week (mid-June)1-2 months1-2 months
November to April1-3 weeksOften days
May to August weekdays2-4 weeks1-2 weeks

These are working rules of thumb from how the region books, not guarantees. The 90-day window is the one to respect: a planner quoted in Southern Living books fall tours about three months ahead because that is when the calendars open.

Stop by stop: how each distillery books

The Maker’s Mark timings come from a third-party planning site rather than the distillery, and Lux Row’s walk-in reputation comes from visitor reports, so treat both as tendencies. For what each tour actually includes and costs, see the distillery tours comparison.

The booking systems you’ll meet

Nearly every distillery sells tickets through its own website, but the checkout underneath differs. Heaven Hill and Maker’s Mark use AnyRoad, Willett uses Peek, and Circa 1856 and The Bar at Willett take reservations on Resy. A few practical consequences:

  • Create accounts ahead of time if you are racing for a release morning.
  • Prices often show only inside the booking widget, and many add service fees at checkout.
  • Your confirmation email is your ticket, but bring a government photo ID too; every tasting is 21+.
  • If a widget will not load, try another browser or allow cookies. Four Roses, for one, loads its booking widget only after you accept its cookie settings.

When a tour says sold out

Sold out rarely means your trip is ruined. Try these in order:

  1. Check weekdays. Tuesday through Thursday slots open up far more often than Fridays and Saturdays. Just avoid Monday and Tuesday for Bardstown Bourbon Co. and Four Roses Cox’s Creek, which do not run tours then.
  2. Try the first or last slot. The first tour of the day and the last one before closing are often the last to fill.
  3. Watch the refund deadline. Where a distillery offers refunds up to 48 hours out, like Log Still, people who cancel release seats around that point. Refresh the calendar two to three days before your date.
  4. Book a tasting instead of a tour. Many distilleries sell shorter tasting-only experiences that open more slots, such as Bardstown Bourbon Co.’s $30 Rickhouse Barrel Thieving.
  5. Go where walk-ins work. Limestone Branch, Boundary Oak and the free bar at Four Roses Cox’s Creek are the reliable fallbacks.
  6. Call. Small distilleries sometimes add a tour or fit two more people into a group. Phone numbers are on each of our distillery pages.
  7. Hire a guide. Private tour companies sometimes hold group bookings. Our tours and transportation guide lists operators serving Bardstown.

The fall and festival rush

September and October are the best months to visit, with highs around 81°F in September and 70°F in October and the least rain of the touring season. They are also when everyone else comes. The Kentucky Bourbon Festival (September 10 to 13 in 2026, September 16 to 19 in 2027) has sold out every year since it became a ticketed, 21+ event in 2021, and Bardstown lodging books out for that weekend. The festival’s own site sends overflow guests to a Louisville hotel with a $30-a-day shuttle. Read our guides to the Kentucky Bourbon Festival and booking a room for festival weekend if you are aiming for it.

October weekends stack fall color, the free Bardstown Arts, Crafts & Antiques Fair (30,000-plus visitors on the second weekend) and peak distillery touring. Late November and December are quieter at distilleries but busy downtown with Christmas events. Our best time to visit page weighs the months.

Rules that affect how you book

  • One tour per distillery per day. Willett cites state law: “guests may only participate in one tour experience per day.” Pick the best experience rather than stacking two.
  • Watch holiday closures. Most distilleries close Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and several close Easter. Four Roses lists a closure on December 9, 2026.
  • Check the weekly calendar. The biggest traps are Bardstown Bourbon Co. (no tours Mon-Tue), Willett (closed Sunday), Four Roses Cox’s Creek (closed Mon-Tue) and Limestone Branch (closed Sun-Mon).
  • Plan the ride before the reservation. Tours are spread across the county, and you’ll taste at every one.

Booking beyond Bardstown

If your trip adds Frankfort or Louisville, those distilleries have stricter windows. Buffalo Trace releases free tour slots every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Eastern, up to eight weeks ahead, according to its plan-your-visit page. Woodford Reserve books online only on a rolling 90-day window, and Old Forester’s Louisville tours hold 14 guests and open three months out. Set phone alarms.

A sample booking timeline for an October weekend

  • 12 weeks out: book Willett and Heaven Hill Springs, then any hand-dip or premium experiences.
  • 10 weeks out: book the rest of your tours and your room.
  • 2-4 weeks out: reserve dinners (The Rickhouse, the Talbott Tavern) and lunch at The Bar at Willett.
  • 2-3 days out: check calendars for cancellations to upgrade a slot or add a stop.

Then map the days around the confirmed tours; our two-day bourbon itinerary shows one way to do it.

Questions people ask

How far in advance should I book Bardstown distillery tours?
For September and October weekends, about three months ahead, since many distilleries release schedules in 90-day blocks. For spring and summer weekdays, two to four weeks is usually enough. Book the tours first, then build meals and lodging around them.
Which distilleries near Bardstown take walk-ins?
Limestone Branch says walk-ins are always welcome, Boundary Oak runs walk-in tours all day, and Four Roses Cox's Creek lets you visit its shop and bar free without a ticket. Lux Row has a reputation for fitting in last-minute visitors. Walk-ins are never guaranteed on fall Saturdays.
Can you do two tours at the same distillery on the same day?
No. Under state law, guests may only take part in one tour experience per distillery per day, as Willett notes on its visit page. Book a second experience for another day.
What happens if I cancel a distillery tour?
Policies vary by distillery and are shown at checkout. Log Still, for example, refunds your ticket less the service fee if you cancel at least 48 hours ahead. Read the terms before you pay, especially for pricier experiences.
When is it hardest to book tours in Bardstown?
Kentucky Bourbon Festival weekend in mid-September (September 16-19 in 2027), October weekends with fall color and the Arts & Crafts Festival, and National Bourbon Week in June. Weekdays in the same months are far easier.
