Bardstown makes an excellent base for day trips because so much of Kentucky is close. Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam and Four Roses are all within about 45 minutes of Court Square, Lincoln’s birthplace is under an hour, and Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort and Buffalo Trace are 60 to 80 minutes away. Sleep in one place, drive out each morning, and come back to dinner on the square.
Every destination, by drive time
These are realistic times from Court Square, a bit longer than the bare routing minimums. Add time for rush hour near Louisville and for slow farm roads.

Bourbon country beyond Nelson County
The big names outside Nelson County, most of them stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail or near it, are an easy morning away. South through farmland, the Loretto and Lebanon loop pairs Maker’s Mark with Limestone Branch. Northeast, the Bluegrass Parkway leads to Lawrenceburg’s Four Roses and Wild Turkey, then on to Buffalo Trace and Castle & Key in Frankfort and Woodford Reserve in Versailles. Buffalo Trace’s free tours are released each Wednesday at 10 a.m., up to eight weeks ahead, and Woodford books online only, so reserve those two first.
The cities: Louisville and Lexington
Louisville gives you the Kentucky Derby Museum, with a guided walk out to Churchill Downs, plus the Whiskey Row distilleries and the Louisville Slugger factory, all about an hour north. Lexington is horse country: Keeneland’s Fall Meet runs October 2 to 24, 2026, and the Breeders’ Cup is there on October 30 and 31.
History and nature
The Lincoln sites near Hodgenville, the Perryville battlefield, Shaker Village and Mammoth Cave make good non-bourbon days, and they suit travelers of every age. Mammoth Cave is the only destination here on Central Time, so a 9 a.m. cave tour starts at 10 a.m. Bardstown time. Closer in, the Abbey of Gethsemani and the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven are both about 25 minutes away and pair into an easy, quiet day. Bernheim Forest in Clermont, with its giant sculptures and a boardwalk high in the tree canopy, works as a half day on its own or an afternoon after a Jim Beam tour.
How to plan your days
Start with our nine day-trip loops, which bundle these stops into routes with the right days of the week. Keep Monday and Tuesday for places open all week, like Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace, because many distilleries and museums close those days. On any bourbon loop, pick a designated driver before the first tasting. For a longer stay built around these trips, see the three-day Bourbon Trail itinerary and where to stay in Bardstown.
