A Romantic Bardstown Getaway

Fireplace suites in Federal-era houses, candlelit bourbon cellars and slow mornings on a brick-and-limestone square.

For a romantic getaway, Bardstown hands you the ingredients: a fireplace suite in a Federal-era house a few blocks from Court Square, a candlelit steak dinner in a brick-arched cellar, and a slow morning of coffee, pastries and window shopping. Book a B&B like Bourbon Manor or the Red Rose Inn, reserve The Rickhouse for dinner, and add one memorable extra: a table for two on the dinner train, a mint julep class at Federal Hill, or an open-cockpit biplane ride over bourbon country.

Why Bardstown works for couples

The town is small enough that you never waste an evening in traffic. The historic district runs 26 blocks around the old courthouse, and the inns, bars and restaurants sit inside it, so you can walk to dinner and walk home. The pace is gentle. Shops close around 5, the bars get lively rather than loud, and Sunday mornings belong to church bells and bakery lines.

It also has a cluster of B&Bs in houses from the late 1700s and early 1800s, most of them run by innkeepers who will book your distillery tours and tell you which table to ask for. That is half the romance handled before you arrive.

Where to stay: the most romantic rooms

These are the stays couples rate highest. All are open and within walking distance of downtown unless noted. Prices are snapshots or published rates, so check the inn’s site.

Bourbon Manor is the showpiece: two pre-Civil War houses on a wooded lot, king beds, gas fireplaces and whirlpool tubs, a full gourmet breakfast, a nightly happy hour and a day spa for guests only. It has a 4.9 rating from more than 600 Tripadvisor reviews, the most of any B&B in town. Book a massage when you reserve the room.

The Red Rose Inn, formerly the Arbor Rose, is smaller and quieter, with four themed rooms, a homemade country breakfast and rockers on the front porch. The Bourbon Ball Inn is even more private, just three suites steps from downtown, some with gas fireplaces, and a breakfast its reviewers keep mentioning.

For a story to tell later, the 1819 Room at Jailer’s Inn has a king bed and a double Jacuzzi inside the 1819 limestone jail, with breakfast in the courtyard in summer and a free tour of the old cell block. And if you want vines and silence, Springhill Winery’s B&B near Bloomfield sits on an estate from 1857, about 10 miles northeast.

The full list lives in our guide to historic inns and B&Bs, and there is a deeper look at Bourbon Manor.

Dinner for two

The Rickhouse is the romantic dinner in town. It sits in the basement of Spalding Hall, built in 1839, and you enter through cast-iron gates under the old stone stairs into brick arches, candlelight and bourbon barrels. Order the ribeye or the filet, the eleven-cheese mac and cheese, and bourbon bread pudding to share, and choose from more than 150 bourbons. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 4 p.m. Reserve online, and call to confirm around Valentine’s Day; in 2026 some holiday bookings were lost.

Other good tables: Toogie’s Table serves upscale Southern plates and cast-iron cornbread (ask ahead if you’re hoping for the old Kurtz fried chicken), with an upstairs bourbon bar and outdoor fire pits for a drink after (dinner Wednesday to Saturday). Kreso’s on N. Third St., in the old theater building, is a family-run Bosnian and European room with homemade bread and 146 bourbons. Oak & Ember at The Trail Hotel is the big-ticket steakhouse, still uneven in reviews, so reserve and set expectations. Our date-night dinner guide ranks them.

For a daytime date, reserve The Bar at Willett on the Willett Distillery hill, Wednesday to Saturday, for cocktails and small plates like the famous egg salad sandwich. Allow two hours, and pair it with a Willett tour.

Date ideas beyond dinner

A table for two on the dinner train

The My Old Kentucky Dinner Train runs a 2.5-hour, four-course dinner in restored 1940s cars on a 35-mile round trip. Standard adult dinner is $116, and a Private Table for Two is $232 per person, per the dinner excursion page. The Valentine’s Dinner on Feb. 13 and 14 (21 and over, $149.50 to $299) adds a bottle of wine and two souvenir glasses. Details on our dinner train page.

A mint julep class at Federal Hill

My Old Kentucky Home offers a $35 Mint Julep Class, a demonstration plus your own cocktail, and a $25 biscuit class, listed on its admission page. Tourism listings say these experiences are for groups of 10 or more and should be booked two weeks ahead, so call (502) 348-3502 to ask whether a couple can join one. The standard mansion tour, $18 per adult, ends with a guide in period costume singing “My Old Kentucky Home.” It gets people every time.

Up in a biplane

Classic Biplane Tours at Samuels Field flies open-cockpit rides for two over the bourbon countryside, with several flight options and prices by phone at (502) 836-5252. See the company’s site. Go early on a clear fall morning.

Wine, candles and forest walks

  • Springhill Winery pours estate wines on a patio above the vineyard, Tuesday to Saturday from noon; see the winery’s site for events.
  • At Sipz & Scentz on N. Third St., you pour your own candle side by side, with local wine or beer on hand, Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 5. The candle bar page takes bookings for busy days.
  • Bernheim Forest in Clermont has a boardwalk 75 feet above the forest floor and 40 miles of trails, for a $15-per-car donation. See our Bernheim guide.
  • The Bardstown Ghost Trek on Friday and Saturday evenings is a good excuse to hold hands in the dark.

When to go

Mid-September through October is the sweet spot, with highs around 70 to 80 degrees and the driest weather of the year. Skip Kentucky Bourbon Festival weekend (Sept. 16 to 19 in 2027) unless you are going, since rooms sell out a year ahead. Late November and December bring Light Up Bardstown, candlelight Christmas tours at the mansion and An Old Kentucky Christmas Carol; our Christmas in Bardstown guide has dates. Midweek in any season means easier dinner reservations and quieter inns.

A two-night plan

Friday: check in by late afternoon, walk the square at golden hour, dinner at The Rickhouse, a nightcap at the Talbott Tavern bar.

Saturday: a long B&B breakfast, then a morning distillery tour with a driver, lunch at The Bar at Willett, and a nap. Evening: the dinner train, or a table at Toogie’s and the fire pits after.

Sunday: pastries from Hadorn’s (go early, they sell out), a mansion tour at My Old Kentucky Home, and a slow drive home. For a fuller schedule, see our weekend in Bardstown itinerary.

One more idea for a slow day: pack a picnic from the downtown bakeries and the farmers market (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings in season) and take it to the grounds at My Old Kentucky Home, where the park has a picnic area and formal gardens around the mansion.

If bourbon is on the agenda, book a driver. The distilleries are spread across the county, and a romantic weekend should end with both of you getting home safely.

What is the most romantic place to stay in Bardstown?
Bourbon Manor Bed & Breakfast Inn is the most-reviewed B&B in town, with king beds, gas fireplaces, whirlpool tubs and a guests-only spa. The Red Rose Inn (four rooms in an 1820 house) and the three-suite Bourbon Ball Inn are quieter and more intimate.
Where should we go for a romantic dinner in Bardstown?
The Rickhouse, in the brick-arched basement of Spalding Hall, is the classic candlelit choice and reviewers often call it romantic. Book online, and confirm your table on holidays. The Bar at Willett is the daytime alternative for cocktails and small plates.
Does the My Old Kentucky Dinner Train do Valentine's dinners?
Yes. The Valentine's Dinner runs on Feb. 13 and 14 for guests 21 and over, priced $149.50 to $299, and includes a bottle of wine and two souvenir glasses per couple. Year-round, you can book a Private Table for Two on the dinner excursion.
When is the best time for a couples trip to Bardstown?
Mid-September through October brings mild weather and fall color, but avoid Kentucky Bourbon Festival weekend unless you are going to it, because rooms sell out. Late November and December are lovely for lights and candlelight tours at My Old Kentucky Home.
